POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) will be a key executive responsible for shaping and overseeing the company’s strategic and tactical R&D initiatives. The CSO will lead scientific teams, drive innovation in drug discovery and development, and ensure the alignment of scientific efforts with the company’s strategic goals. The ideal candidate is a thought leader in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry with a proven track record of scientific and organizational leadership. The role will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Scientific Strategy and Leadership
• Develop and implement the company’s R&D strategy to align with business objectives and market opportunities.
• Provide effective advice, guidance and support to senior leadership and the Board of Directors on executing the company’s strategic research roadmap.
• Identify emerging scientific trends and technologies, especially in Immunology to maintain company’s competitive edge in the industry.
• Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and scientific excellence across the organization.
Drug Discovery and Development
• Oversee all phases of research, from pre-clinical research to early clinical development.
• Ensure the pipeline is robust, balanced, and strategically aligned with unmet medical needs.
Drive the development of novel therapies through rigorous scientific investigation and innovation.
• Oversee the company’s intellectual property portfolio, including patent strategy and protection.
Team Development and Management
• Lead by example to ensure a productive and compliant working environment for all employees, including the ability the delegate responsibility and motivate a team, while at the same time maintaining unambiguous accountability for delivering upon commitment.
• Attract, retain, and mentor top talent in the scientific and biomedical fields.
External Partnerships and Collaborations
• Build and maintain strong relationships with academic institutions, industry partners, and regulatory agencies.
• Communicate research progress and strategic updates to the CEO and senior leadership.
• Represent the company’s scientific vision in external forums, including conferences and investor meetings.
Regulatory and Compliance Oversight
• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and ethical standards in R&D activities.
• Contribute to the preparation of reports and regulatory documents for submission to health authorities.
• Partner with clinical, regulatory, and manufacturing teams to ensure smooth transitions from research to commercialization.
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• PhD in a Life Science discipline, MD or equivalent advanced degree with strong preference in Immunology or related sciences.
• 20+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical and/or biotech industry with significant expertise in related functions e.g. human immunology, immuno-oncology required with minimum 10 years in leadership positions.
• Clear track record in the successful preclinical and clinical development of immune-modulatory therapeutics. Experience with early scientific development in the immune-oncology area strongly preferred.
• Experience leading global high-performing divisions or functional groups.
• Experience contributing to the successful transition of drug candidates to the clinical-development phase resulting in favorable outcomes.
• Strong scientific acumen.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines and cultures.
• Strong written and spoken communications skills.
• Demonstrated management of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
• Expertise in intellectual property strategy and protection.
• Self-motivation with a proactive mindset.
• Strong interpersonal influence and active listening skills, flexible team player with the highest ethical and business standards.
• Ability to travel domestically/internationally up to 15% of the time.
The salary range for this position is $400,000 USD to $450,000 USD annually. This salary range is an estimate of what we reasonably expect to pay for this posted position, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation geographic location, individual education, experience, tenure, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for bonuses, benefits, and participation in the company’s stock option plan.
